There’s a nice article on Zhang Hemin, the chief of Wolong Nature Reserve, also known as the father of pandas on China.org.cn. His research and creative problem solving has helped pandas successfully breed in captivity. He found that the panda’s emotions and feeling of security was directly related to their breeding patterns.
Experiencing failure after failures, finally Zhang recognized that the biggest obstacle to propagation is pandas’ emotion. He requested the staff take care of pandas 24/7 and communicate with them while feeding. He said, “Pandas are similar to humans that once they feel nervous they will secrete irregularly and fall sick.”
Also, that photo of him makes me smile. He’s almost as adorable as the pandas!

wow i envy this guy a lot. I wish I could have a close encounter with pandas too. i would really hug them. hmm. Makes me wonder how they smell like.
